Making news

LIONS LOSE CATCALLS: Despite Penn State's worst start in 36 years, it might be too much to ask fans not to boo. But that's just what the faculty did on Wednesday, approving a resolution to denounce "negative cheering" at football games. The anti-booing resolution will be read before every game at Beaver Stadium. "I think as soon as they make that announcement there's going to be a chorus of boos," said Matt Brinker, a senior from South Carolina. While some people might feel making their displeasure known from the stands is an American tradition, officials feel it has gotten out of hand during the team's disappointing 3-5 performance.

Living high on the hog

John Cooper has gone hog wild: The Ohio State coach apparently has swapped his lucky buckeye for a lucky pig. He pulled a tiny carved wooden pig from his pocket during a news conference Monday. For years, Cooper claimed he carried a lucky buckeye. He said he wasn't certain who gave him the pig, but the charm worked last week in a 38-10 victory at Iowa. "Rubbed the pig last week and we won," Cooper said. The No. 12 Buckeyes play at No. 16 Purdue today. If either team wins the rest of its games, it wins the Big Ten. Asked if he would no longer carry a buckeye, Cooper said, "The buckeye brings you more luck when you've got good players."
