Proud Moon helps Chiefs

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Entering his 17th season, Warren Moon had thrown for more yards (49,117) and more touchdowns (290) than any other active quarterback.

Yet, to everyone close to the Chiefs organization, the way Moon has conducted himself the past couple of years has been more impressive than any pass he ever threw.

"He's been tremendous. I'm really proud of him," coach Gunther Cunningham said. "It took him quite a while to get this system under his belt. It's been totally different than anything he's done in his career."

It has been his bad luck to be playing behind Elvis Grbac with virtually no chance to get in a game. Last year, Moon got in for only three plays as Grbac made it through the season without getting hurt.

Then Sunday, against St. Louis, Grbac sustained an elbow injury on his final play of the third period and Moon rushed in. He was 3-for-3 with one touchdown pass in a 54-34 victory over the defending Super Bowl champs. On his first pass, he took a helmet to the chin and required five stitches.

Thursday, Grbac pronounced himself 100 percent fit for Sunday's game at Seattle.

Moon admits this has been a rough ride this season.

"It's probably been toughest earlier in the season because you feel an emptiness," he said. "You don't feel fulfillment.

"You lose and you feel like you could have contributed. You win and you don't feel like you contributed anything. So it's really an empty feeling sometimes."

DOLPHINS: Linebacker Zach Thomas will miss at least two games after having his sprained right ankle placed in a cast for the third time this season.

EAGLES: Running back Duce Staley, on crutches after foot surgery two weeks ago, fell when he tried to navigate past a puddle outside the coaches' basement offices at Veterans Stadium. X-rays were negative.

PACKERS: Jurors from outside southeastern Wisconsin will be empaneled for the sexual assault trial of former Green Bay tight end Mark Chmura.

PANTHERS: Sean Gilbert was fined $5,000 for violating the league's dress code -- showing too much white on his socks -- against San Francisco.

REDSKINS: Coach Norv Turner said it is unlikely that outside linebacker Shawn Barber will play Monday against the Tennessee Titans. Barber suffered a sprained medial collateral ligament in his right knee. ... The team is replacing on-field announcer Bruce Kelly in an attempt to avoid problems with the NFL. Before the Baltimore game, Kelly used the stadium PA system to insult Ravens fans. ... New York real estate developer Howard Milstein, who once entertained hopes of owning the Washington Redskins, lost his bid to recover a $20-million deposit on the team.

SEAHAWKS: Quarterback Brock Huard will miss Sunday's game against Kansas City because of a concussion. Huard, injured against Oakland, was placed on the inactive list Friday. Jon Kitna will take Huard's place.

TITANS: Running back Eddie George, who practiced without a brace on his sprained knee, said he doesn't know if he will play Monday night against Washington.

SUPER BOWL: NFL owners will choose between Miami, Jacksonville and Oakland, Calif., to host the 2005 Super Bowl when they gather next week in Atlanta for their fall meeting. This season's league championship will be played Jan. 28 in Tampa, followed by games in New Orleans and San Diego. Houston probably will be confirmed for 2004 and Detroit for 2006.
