Man charged in anthrax hoax held without bailBy Times staff reports
© St. Petersburg Times, BROOKSVILLE -- Judge Daniel Merritt denied bail Saturday to the man charged with sending powder-filled envelopes to the Hernando County government center and Sheriff's Office earlier this month. Donald Kalter, 35, of New Port Richey, remained in the Hernando County Jail on two counts of using a hoax weapon of mass destruction. He faces up to 15 years in prison. The envelopes, received by the county Oct. 11, caused officials to evacuate the two buildings because of fears they might contain anthrax. One of them was addressed to Merritt. Sheriff Richard Nugent said Kalter apparently mailed the letter because one of his friends was unhappy with a divorce proceeding before the judge. Nugent said Friday that Kalter told an informer, who remained unnamed, that he was paying back the government. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • Tampa Bay Times
