Red tide still lingers near Skyway

An outbreak of red tide that began in early August continues to plague the beaches and shores north of the Skyway Bridge.

Although people should not be alarmed by the decomposing fish in the water and on the beaches, the algae that kills the fish and causes the water to turn a mahogany color can cause respiratory irritation for people with asthma and emphysema.

Earnest Truby, a scientist with the Florida Marine Research Institute, said there is no telling how long the red tide could last.
