ST. PETERSBURG -- Hoping for a safe Halloween, police say say they plan to be especially vigilant for seasonal skulduggery Tuesday night.
They also are suggesting safety tips for trick-or-treaters and their parents:
- Make sure youngsters wear light colors or put reflective tape on costumes.
- Go in groups so bullies can't target younger trick-or-treaters.
- Be sure costumes are flame-retardant.
- Keep costumes short to prevent trips and falls.
- Consider trick-or-treating while it's still light. If it's dark, make sure someone has a flashlight and choose well-lighted streets.
- Make sure youngsters know not to enter strange houses or strangers' cars.
- Restrict trick-or-treat visits to homes with porch or outside lights on.
- Don't cut across yards.
- Consider a home Halloween party or neighborhood event as a trick-or-treat alternative.
- Face paint is safer than wearing a loose-fitting mask that may obscure vision.
