Captain's corner

Kingfish and Spanish mackerel are chewing the bottom out of our boats. Capt. Darrell Pachman on the Enterprise has been catching limits of kingfish and Spanish mackerel by noon each day. He spends the remainder of the day bottom fishing. Although the kingfish haven't been big, some in the 20-pound range have been boated. Pachman has been running green king spoons behind No. 2 and No. 3 planers.

We have had success with live bait and caught a couple of 25-pounders Friday prefishing for a tournament.

Fishermen from the Redington Pier report steady kingfish landings and some fish up to 30 pounds. When the wind is out of the east and blows hard for a few days, you can count on the bait and kingfish to be next to the beach.

The Skyway is surrounded by bait schools -- blue runners, cigar minnows and Spanish sardines. The best way to get live bait at the Skyway is to use gold hook rigs.

You can target kingfish for the next month and should have good success. Places holding kingfish are the Rube Allen, Clearwater hard bottom, Betty Rose and the Sheridan.
