TAMPA -- This year's Guavaween celebration was a kinder, gentler version than those of years past, with more children in attendance and fewer arrests, police said.

Tampa police Lt. Paul Driscoll said 75,000 people came Saturday night to Ybor City, compared to 100,000 in 1999. Officers made 20 arrests during the event; seven for battery on a law enforcement officer, five for resisting arrest, three for disorderly conduct, two for possession of marijuana and one each for domestic violence, battery and trespassing.

No officers were injured, Driscoll said. Ambulances were called to the area for 66 minor problems, police said, but no one was seriously hurt.
