Thieves cart off equipment from Tarpon City HallBy KATHERINE GAZELLA
© St. Petersburg Times, TARPON SPRINGS -- Police are investigating a break-in at City Hall and the loss of more than $10,000 worth of computer equipment from two city departments. Sometime between 5 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. Monday, someone broke into two locked offices on the second floor of City Hall, said Tarpon Springs police Capt. Ron Holt. The thief or thieves took city-owned computer equipment from the Management Information Systems office, which Holt oversees, and the information and research office, he said. Holt would not specify what equipment was taken because the case still is being investigated. But he said that city information is stored on servers and was not taken. "We haven't lost any data," he said. He estimated the stolen equipment is worth $10,000 to $12,000. He said the Police Department is following leads in the investigation. He would not say how many people might have been involved in the theft. Two shows were held last weekend at the Performing Arts Center, which is in the auditorium on the first floor of City Hall. Holt said it was unclear if the burglars came into the building when the main doors were unlocked for the 8 p.m. Saturday performance of The Comedy of Errors or the 3 p.m. Sunday violin concert. -- Staff writer Katherine Gazella can be reached at (727) 445-4182 or gazella@sptimes.com. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • Tampa Bay Times
