Candidate reply
© St. Petersburg Times, published October 31, 2000 The Times offers candidates not recommended by its editorial board an opportunity to reply. Here is one of those replies. Annie 'Pat' Williams, Democratic candidate for supervisor of electionsThank you for your previous endorsement and for the opportunity to respond to your endorsement of my opponent. My campaign does not revolve exclusively around my 24 years of experience. I put my experience first because I feel it is an essential asset. When an employer interviews someone for a position they have available, what is the foremost quality that they are looking for? Experience. No amount of good ideas will get them the job if they don't have the knowledge required to back up their word. When I say that I would not make any major changes in the office, I am speaking of within the office environment. We have an excellent working staff with a solid foundation to build and achieve my goals as supervisor. My opponent's comment about "dead weight" is insulting. I want my workers to feel confident in making independent decisions, and I want to foster more of a team atmosphere, as opposed to the current autocratic working environment. In my brochures, I have stated that I will also put into action a system to get our lowest voter turnout age group to the polls, improve communications with our voters, expand systems currently in place, have candidate and campaign finance information accessible electronically, and upgrade the Web page to gain the interest of voting-age citizens, including a special kids' page where our children can go each month to vote on something special and return later to see the results of the "election." Our precincts will undergo some changes no matter who is elected to office due to reapportionment following the 2000 census and our schools are NOT closed on election days. Currently, we maintain contacts at all of the Hernando County nursing homes in order to ensure everyone who cannot make it to the polls may receive an absentee ballot. Most of my opponent's ideas are actually systems that are already in place. The rest may sound good, but they are not in compliance with the law. On Nov. 7, make an educated vote and vote for Annie "Pat" Williams. I have the proven experience, knowledge, integrity and leadership to be your next supervisor of elections. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • Tampa Bay Times
