A good time for prayer in schools
© St. Petersburg Times,
"God bless America." We now see this sign everywhere we travel. How wonderful it is that we finally are asking for God's blessing on our country. Why did the Sept. 11 disaster have to happen before we realized the need to have America be blessed by God?
Our currency says "In God We Trust," and yet we have sent a contradictory message to our children and to God that although we allow his blessing and trust him with our currency, we will not allow our children to have any mention of God in the school system.
Perhaps Pinellas County should consider uniting to bring prayer back into our school system to begin a revolutionary turnaround for the nation we love.
Let's defeat terrorism in all its many forms
After America wins its war with foreign terrorists, I hope the enthusiasm continues and our leaders wage war on the domestic front against the element in our society which perpetrates its own brand of terrorism upon fellow Americans.
Long before foreign terrorists launched their attack on America, our citizens voiced their fears of walking in their own neighborhoods for fear of being mugged. Hard-working people were afraid to stop at a traffic light because a fellow American might hold a gun to their head to hijack the car they worked two jobs to pay for.
People were afraid to send their children to school because a fellow American would enter the grounds and buildings and shoot an AK-47 at students and teachers. On our highways we fear other Americans who speed, run red lights and stop signs, and display road rage because they perceived being cut off in traffic, and others who drive drunk.
We fear the American criminal element that breaks into our homes and places of business to steal and rape, and even when caught in the act, are let out of prison due to overcrowding, only to repeat their crimes against decent Americans who feel the justice system has let them down.
Sorry, folks, terrorism is nothing new to America, and just because the last wave was perpetrated by foreigners doesn't make it any worse than the terrorism we have been living with for the last 30 years at the hands of our fellow Americans. We will never know peace and feel secure until terrorism in all its forms is stamped out and those responsible are held accountable under the existing laws of this land.
Maybe it's time we allow God back into our schools and other public places, as well as our personal lives. Maybe then we'll realize the meaning of the adage, "No God, no peace. . . . Know God, know peace."
Thanks to all involved in raising flag at bridge
What a glorious and patriotic feeling to see our beautiful new American flag and flagpole at the Memorial Causeway drawbridge. To all concerned with obtaining and erecting this symbolic banner, we would like to offer our thank-you, and long may it wave for all to see, admire and salute.
