Inmate charged again with attacking deputy

LAND O'LAKES -- A county jail inmate with a history of abusing deputies and damaging his jail cell was charged again Monday, this time accused of breaking a fire sprinkler and spitting on a corrections deputy, his arrest report states.

Brian Challis, 27, who is serving a 40-year sentence for shooting into an occupied dwelling, faces charges of battery on detention staff and tampering with a fire suppression device, deputies said.

About 6:30 p.m. he broke the sprinkler and then spit on corrections deputy Warren Jones, the report states. It's the second time this month that Challis has been charged with destroying a sprinkler. He was also charged in April with assaulting two bailiffs.

Challis's half-brother, Richard Matthew Touchton, was charged with escape Oct. 18 after he broke free from the county jail for more than three hours.

Suspects sought after chase, shots exchanged

LACOOCHEE -- Pasco County sheriff's deputies were searching for the men who fired shots at deputies during a chase early Monday.

Two people fled north on U.S. 98 into Hernando County in a 1988 Isuzu truck after deputies tried to stop them about 1 a.m.

They pulled into the driveway of a house at 6436 Madonna Drive near Ridge Manor and ran, reports stated.

Reports state that the truck's passenger turned and fired four shots at Deputy Rafthel Morales as they ran. Morales fired two shots back with his Glock pistol.

Deputies brought a dog to search for the people but had no luck. They found two rocks of methamphetamine, as well as a cell phone.

No arrests were made Tuesday evening.

Deputies search for man who robbed store

DADE CITY -- Sheriff's deputies were searching for the man who on Monday night robbed Vaughn's Country Store, 34550 Blanton Road.

A store clerk, who was not named, said the man came in and handed her a piece of paper stating, "Politely hand over all the money or I'll have to start shooting."

She gave the man an undisclosed amount of cash, and he fled west.

The clerk described the robber as a slender black man about 20 years old. She said he had brown eyes and black hair, was about 5 feet 4 inches to 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighed between 120 and 150 pounds. He was wearing a dark blue ski cap.

Police made no arrests Tuesday evening.

Investigators seek new leads in disappearance

On the fourth anniversary of Michael Wayne Allan's disappearance, sheriff's investigators are seeking new leads.

Allan of Holiday was last seen leaving work at Brooksville's Plaza Dodge on Halloween in 1997, investigators said. He headed to pick up his son for trick-or-treating but he never made it to ex-wife's home in Tampa.

About a month later, Allan's 1989 Dodge Daytona was found abandoned in a Tarpon Springs shopping plaza.

He is 6 feet, weighs 180 pounds and has a medium build. He has brownish-blond, wavy hair and brown eyes. Investigators ask that anyone with information contact detective Pete Weekes toll-free at 1-800-854-2862, ext. 7279.
