Say cheese!
By MICHELE MILLER
© St. Petersburg Times, LAND O'LAKES -- How do you make the best cheese sandwich? Well, you might start off with the cheese, add a little typical fare like ham or salami, and perhaps a few, um, unique ingredients. Say, pretzels, fudge sauce, sprinkles, blueberries, sour cream and onion potato chips or pineapple? That's what some fifth-graders at Sanders Memorial Elementary School came up with in their pursuit to win a contest sponsored by the Dairy Council of Florida called "Build a Better Cheese Sandwich." Of course, most of the unique ingredients didn't make it past the preliminary competition held Oct. 18 where classmates and teachers were the judges. "Some of it was disgusting. I thought about throwing up," said fifth-grader Chris Kyle, who like many of his classmates sampled each and every sandwich. Last week, Chris and three other finalists took to making their favorite selections for students and school board employees in the media center at Sanders Elementary. From the Dairy Council, Todd Cliff, supervisor of staff development, Julie Hedine, coordinator of food and nutrition services, and Lori Yusko, director of communications, all made the trek over to Sanders to check out the students' presentations and do a little sampling. Chris earned an honorable mention for his creation called "The Stunner." He hoped his sandwich, made with ham, salami, roast beef, American Cheese, mayonnaise and sour cream and onion chips, would appeal to fans of wrestler "Stone Cold" Steve Austin. Chris drew inspiration from Austin for the sandwich's "Stunner" name: "That's one of his best moves," said Chris, who came up with the ingredients "just by looking in my refrigerator." A real student favorite was "The Ultimate Pizza Sandwich," courtesy of Anthony Makowski. Ingredients were Italian bread, pizza sauce, Parmesan cheese, American cheese, bacon bits, honey smoked ham, hard salami, mozzarella cheese and pepperoni. "Everybody likes pizza," said Anthony, who was the third-place winner. "Well almost everybody likes pizza." The "Hawaiian Delight," was Kirsten Lane's concoction, which won second place. She used ham, Muenster cheese, lettuce, mayonnaise, black pepper, honey mustard, maraschino cherries and rings of pineapple -- not one of her favorite fruits, but something she thought would be a little different. James Burke wowed them all with "The I'm Proud to Be an American Cheese Sandwich." The huge sandwich made on a 2-foot sub roll consisted of American cheese, blueberries, sweet red bell pepper, string cheese and star fruit, cut into star shapes, all held together with an American flag toothpick. "I thought of the incident that happened on Sept. 11," said James. "Then I thought of anything that was red, white and blue and resembled the American flag." Note: The recipe for James Burke's award winning sandwich will now be sent on to final competition, where winners will receive a savings bond for $100 to $300 and cash ($50 to $150) for supplies for their classrooms. We'll let you know if he wins. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • Tampa Bay Times
