Credit Matt Johnson with some perseverance even if his 77 was good enough for only eighth place in the Class A, Region 3 Tournament on Tuesday at Cypress head in Port Orange.

The Hernando senior went to a local emergency room Monday night for a cortisone shot to alleviate pain in a wrist he had badly sprained in a weight-lifting accident a month ago -- an injury that cost him much playing time recently and ultimately, perhaps, a state berth.

"It bothered him so bad, and he kept aggravating it," Leopards coach Pete Lahey said. "He tried to play some practice holes on Monday, and it hurt him so much more he couldn't even hit."

The top two teams and top two individuals not on those squads advance to the state tourney.

Hernando's Fred Farmer, a sophomore who qualified for state last year, missed the cut with a 79.

Daniel Kennedy used a 9-iron to ace the 115-yard, par-3 fifth hole at Rivard on Oct. 24.

Robert Berlin, 61, hit a hole-in-one on the 124-yard 13th at Sherman Hills on Oct. 16. SEVEN HILLS: Sue Cawood shot a plus-5 on Oct. 17, winning the A Flight in the Ladies Golf League weekly points game. Cindy Holland (plus-2) was next. Bev Johnson won the B at even-par, ahead of Rose Kundrith (minus-6). Margaretha Samuelsson tied with Eloise Reich (minus-1) atop the C Flight.
