'Boom' brings lots of calls, no answers
By Times staff writer
© St. Petersburg Times, SPRING HILL -- A mysterious boom around lunchtime Wednesday prompted more than 100 calls to sheriff's deputies in Hernando and Pasco counties. No one appeared to know exactly what the noise was. Authorities said they believed the "boom" was caused by military aircraft breaking through the sound barrier off the west coast near Hernando Beach. But a spokeswoman from MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa said they had no aircraft in the area. "It's just not us," said Diane Green. About 30 people living near Hernando Beach called to report the noise, said Lt. Joe Paez of the Sheriff's Office. In Pasco, about 100 people called, said spokesman Kevin Doll. "There was no damage or smoke that could be associated with an explosion," Paez said. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • Tampa Bay Times
