Man charged in assault on 5-year-old girl

DADE CITY -- A 31-year-old man was arrested Tuesday on charges that he sexually assaulted a 5-year-old girl.

Michael Donald Davenport of 32828 Tyndall Road was at a house on Howard Avenue when he crawled into bed with the girl in the early morning, a sheriff's report said.

The girl told deputies that Davenport removed her underwear and fondled her. She said Davenport also removed his underwear and tried to have intercourse with her, the report said.

The girl's mother reportedly saw Davenport leaving the girl's room about 7:30 a.m. She told deputies she found his underwear on the floor at the foot of the girl's bed.

Davenport faces charges of capital sexual battery on a child younger than 12.

He was taken to the Land O'Lakes jail, where he was held Wednesday without bail.

Troopers: Drunken driver causes serious wreck

LAND O'LAKES -- A 43-year-old man was arrested Tuesday evening after a serious wreck in which authorities said he was intoxicated.

Timothy Alan Dudley of 21838 Ocean Pines Drive was driving on Ehren Cutoff when he didn't stop at the intersection of U.S. 41 and ran into a car that was headed south, Florida Highway Patrol troopers said.

Troopers said Dudley failed a sobriety test at the scene and later registered a 0.417 blood-alcohol content on a breath test. A reading of 0.08 is the level at which a driver is presumed impaired.

Reports state that Dudley also had a small amount of cocaine in his wallet.

The other driver, whom reports did not name, was flown to St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa with serious injuries, though they were not thought to be life-threatening.

Dudley faces charges of possession of cocaine, driving under the influence, DUI personal injury and DUI property damage.

He was taken to the Land O'Lakes jail, where he remained Wednesday in lieu of $7,500 bail.

Investigators say wiring may have started fire

ARIPEKA -- The Tuesday fire that destroyed an auto parts store started with an electrical problem inside the building's wall, investigators said Wednesday.

"It went up through the wall into the attic area and just mushroomed the whole roof," said Pasco County Fire Marshal Larry Whitten. "It spread pretty fast."

Accurate Auto Parts at 18736 U.S. 19 suffered $300,000 damage, Whitten said.

"That's pretty much everything," he said. "It's in pretty bad shape."

The business, owned by 35-year-old Thomas Witeck, was insured, Whitten said.

Flames from the rush-hour fire reached at least 35 feet in the area and sent black smoke billowing across U.S. 19. No other buildings were damaged, he said.

No one was injured in the blaze, Whitten said. A passer-by on U.S. 19 saw it and called 911 at 5:50 p.m. Workers at the store had left at 5 p.m.

Unbeknownst to them, the fire might have already been burning in the walls, Whitten said.

The wires might have been damaged, he said. They led to an electrical outlet that had four or five cords plugged into it.

Grandmother robbed outside grocery store

PORT RICHEY -- A grandmother who had just loaded her grandchildren into the car was knocked to the ground and her purse was stolen Tuesday night in the Winn-Dixie parking lot, Pasco County sheriff's deputies.

The woman was loading groceries in her trunk about 8:50 p.m. when she was hit in the lower back and knocked to her knees, deputies said. A man grabbed her purse and ran east through the Applebee's parking lot.

She had been buying Halloween supplies with her grandchildren at the store, 8615 Little Road, she told deputies.

Deputies did not release any information about the victim. The Sheriff's Office unsuccessfully searched for a suspect with dogs and helicopters.

Mother being sought in kids' disappearance

The Pasco Sheriff's Office is seeking help in finding a mother wanted in the kidnappings last week of her three children.

Officials said that Barbara Forret, 40, of New Port Richey took the girls on Oct. 24 from their bus stop in Regency Park about about 4:10 p.m. She was driving a silver 1993 Dodge Caravan. Investigators believe she still is in the area, sheriff's spokesman Jon Powers said.

The girls are Rachael Ruppert, 11, Kaitlyn Forret, 7, and Shelby Forret, 6. They are students at Calusa Elementary, Powers said.

Forret has been ruled by the courts to be an unfit mother and is not allowed to have contact with the kids, Powers said.

Anyone with information should contact Detective Robert Hamm at (727) 847-5878, ext. 7755.
