THE RAT MAN COMETH: He ran across the floor around the fourth inning Tuesday and hid in the corner of the Arizona dugout, a rat so large the D'backs still were talking about it Wednesday. "I heard it was so big all you needed was a saddle," Luis Gonzalez said. "A steroided rat," Mark Grace said. "They had to throw a box over him and carry him out. I guess he didn't have credentials. We thought he might be bugged."

TABLOID HEADLINE OF THE DAY: "CLEMENCY" -- the New York Daily News.

NON BASEBALL TABLOID HEADLINE OF THE DAY: "THIS TIME MIKE IS AIR-RELEVANT" -- the New York Post on one of its eight stories related to Michael Jordan's comeback game.

KEY STAT: 96 -- Number of Series games played at Yankee Stadium.

MUSICAL REVIEW: Lee Greenwood performed his patriotic anthem God Bless the U.S.A. ... Opera star Denyce Graves, a mezzo-soprano, sang the national anthem. ... Irish tenor Ronin Tynan, another Yankee Stadium regular, gave a touching rendition of God Bless America.
