Top Five
Current movies recommended by the Times
1. Monsters, Inc. -- First toys, then bugs, now Pixar Animation Studios reveals the secret lives of things that go bump in the closet. Wonderful vocals by Billy Crystal and John Goodman.
2. Mulholland Drive -- David Lynch returns to twisted form with a film noir mystery that's even more perplexing after it's solved. Equal parts brilliant and exasperating.
3. From Hell -- Twin brothers Allen and Albert Hughes depict a menace to another society: Jack the Ripper. Johnny Depp stars as an opium-addled psychic.
4.Iron Monkey -- Martial arts mayhem defying gravity and logic. Directed by Yuen Woo Ping, choreographer of fight scenes in The Matrix and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.
5.Training Day -- Denzel Washington's raging portrayal of a corrupt narcotics cop is one of the year's best performances. Ethan Hawke co-stars as a naive rookie in a stylish crime yarn.
