Sometimes, badness makes you smile
At first glance, Polly Holt's mixed media sculpture Her Badness looks puzzling. Holt searches out industrial discards, reassembling them in forms of her own invention, asking us to consider her unconventional approach to aesthetics. When we know her intention and the title, we can see her three-legged piece with its body of glass, hand-wrapped in copper wire, and the saucy tilt of surrounding tendrils as a clever piece of whimsy. The work is 22 by 22 inches. Holt's show opens Friday at Hillsborough Community College Ybor Campus Art Gallery, Palm Avenue and 15th Street; (813) 253-7674. Hours for the show, in room 101 of the Performing Arts Building, are 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Monday through Friday through December 3. A reception takes place 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday and is followed by a faculty music recital at 7:30. Events and the gallery are free and open to the public.
