GULFPORT -- The "100 in 2000" show gets its name from its numbers: it features the works of 100 local artists, and each work will be sold for $100. Half goes to the artist; half goes to Positive Expressions, a non-profit gallery that aims to empower HIV-positive people by developing and supporting their self-expression and educating the public through the arts.
The show is modeled on a successful fundraiser for Provincetown Art Association and Museum in Massachusetts.
Some of the artists participating in "100 in 2000" include Josette Urso, columnist and TV personality Sterling Powell, Hugo Porcaro, Lynn Ash and "Art For Life" founder Victor Figueredo. The art styles range from the realistic to the surreal and use a wide variety of mediums. Some artists have created three-dimensional pieces for the show.
"Works have been flying in," says Patsi Aguero, participating artist and show curator. "We have been getting all sorts of calls about the show and how soon people can come in to buy art. We are trying to make it as fair for the community as possible. It's really first come, first served. Once a piece is sold, that is it."

The gallery also hosts group meetings, teaches art classes, offers the use of an art library to the public and has started a children's program. It has recently reopened its gift shop, filled with donated artworks, including photographer Davida Jones' "Working Women" series.
Friday's opening show coincides with Gulfport's First Friday art walk, so art lovers can make an evening of it.
"This show is a win-win situation," says participating artist Cid Bolduc. "It's a great opportunity to support artists and a non-profit organization while purchasing some fantastic art work."
