The Gujarati Samaj, the area's most prominent Indian cultural organization, brings together music, food and fashion during the daylong India Festival 2000, 1 p.m.-10 p.m. Saturday at the USF Sun Dome, 4202 E Fowler Ave., Tampa.
The festival, now in its 13th year, includes entertainment by more than 50 dance groups. And there will be lots of authentic food. At least 20 of the 70 booths will be devoted strictly to food, serving such traditional dishes as samosas (fried pastry packed with vegetables) andpachori (pastry loaded with peas and spices.) Much of the food will be homemade.
Admission is $6 for adults, $3 for children younger than 12.
Cartoons and comedy
Hagar the Horrible, Dagwood, Blondie and other cartoon characters kick off the Sarasota Comedy Festival Friday with a cartoon walk and festival in downtown Sarasota, Main Street and Palm Avenue. The activities from 5:30 to 9 p.m. are free and include music, cartoon art and a chalk art area for kids.
Many of the events during the 10-day festival are either pricey or sold-out. But other free or low-cost happenings include:
Kid's Komedy Club with ice-cream social, 11 a.m. Sat., Florida Studio Theatre, 1241 N Palm Ave., Sarasota, $5. (941) 366-9000.
And Casual Comedy on the Key, a family festival with cartoon characters and children's activities. Noon-4 p.m. Sunday at Siesta Key Village, west of Sarasota. Free.
