Show your colors

Tuesday is make-it-or-break-it day throughout the United States, when voters will choose a new president and lots of other national, state and local office holders. The next week, we honor veterans of military service. It's an excellent time to show our nation's colors: red, white and blue.

FLAG

Fly the flag every day, or exchange it for your decorative banners on occasions when you feel patriotic. Measures 3 feet by 5 feet. $20.95. Beaver Flags, Largo.

WASTEBASKET

Stars and stripes decorate this wastebasket, which will fit nicely into an American theme. Too pretty for trash? Use it to hold umbrellas or magazines. $16.99. T.J. Maxx.

BLUE BOWL

We like the looks of the swirl pattern in this Italian glass bowl, which is both decorative and useful. An acquaintance tells us of two happy goldfish that call one home. $20. Pier 1 Imports.

STRING BAGS

These shopping bags may look dainty, but don't be fooled. They'll expand to hold up to 40 pounds of groceries; empty, they fit into pocket or purse. They're made in lots of other colors, too. The Eco-Bags string bag. $4.99 each. The Fresh Market, Clearwater; http://www.eco-bags.com
