TARPON SPRINGS -- A suspicious fire damaged the second floor of a house on Alt. U.S. 19 Thursday morning, according to Tarpon Springs fire officials.

The house at 1727 Alt. U.S. 19, which is for sale, appeared to be occupied by transients, Deputy Fire Chief Kevin Bowman said. Beer cans, cigarette butts and food remnants littered the house, and the door was ajar when firefighters arrived, he said. The city's fire marshal, a certified arson inspector and the Palm Harbor Fire Department's arson dog will investigate.

A call about the fire came in about 9:45 a.m., and the fire mostly was contained in the eastern part of the second floor, Bowman said. The fire caused less than $10,000 in damage to the two-story, Mediterranean-style house.
