Twin Branch Acres may get a stoplight

Traffic engineers may connect Twin Branch Acres and Douglas Roads, and a light would be installed where the two roads meet Race Track Road.

WESTCHASE -- Traffic planners have proposed realigning the entrance to Twin Branch Acres to meet with nearby Douglas Road, creating one standard intersection -- and a new stoplight -- along burgeoning Race Track Road.

"They've been begging for a traffic light at that entrance, but there's not enough traffic at that intersection to warrant one," said Steve Valdez, community relations manager for Hillsborough County.

Now traffic engineers think they can solve the problem by connecting Twin Branch Acres and Douglas roads.

By realigning those roads to create one intersection instead of two, a traffic light could be installed where the two roads would meet Race Track Road. It would ease traffic flow and improve safety along Race Track Road, Valdez said.

A public hearing on the proposed $720,000 project will be held at Davidsen Middle School, 10501 Montague St., Thursday at 6:30 p.m. County engineers will answer questions and hear residents' comments and concerns about the construction.

The project would involve swinging the end of Twin Branch Acres Road about 225 feet north so that it will connect with Douglas Road.

The state Department of Transportation would install a traffic light at that intersection.

Construction should begin in October 2001 and last about 6 months, said Jeff Herndon, a Hillsborough County public works manager.
