Bucs get wins back

TAMPA -- Less than a month after the Florida High School Activities Association ruled Berkeley Prep must forfeit all of its regular-season matches for using an ineligible player, an appeals board overturned the ruling Thursday. So instead of being 3-26 (including three wins in the playoffs) and without freshman setter Eden Ramos, whom the dispute centered around, the Bucs are 19-10 and Ramos is eligible for Saturday's Class 3A, Region 3 semifinal against Sarasota Cardinal Mooney.

The FHSAA charged Berkeley with a recruiting violation as a result of Ramos attending Berkeley after she played for the Tampa Bay Juniors Volleyball Club, for which Bucs coach Randy Dagostino is the director.

Berkeley filed an appeal when the punishment was handed down Oct. 17.

"We feel that the right decision was made," Berkeley Prep athletic director Bobby Reinhart said. "Berkeley had in no way recruited Eden Ramos for athletic purposes, and we are pleased that the FHSAA recognized this fact. Eden had wanted to attend Berkeley since grade school."
