Depth earns Bulls 4A-4 boys title

BRADENTON -- Sickles' Daniel Doromal and Adam Sisler took the top two spots, but Bloomingdale still managed to win the Class 4A, District 4 boys cross country meet Thursday at G.T. Bray Park. Travis Morris, Brandon Coughlin, Gerrit Beko and Ray Gossage finished third, sixth, ninth and 10th, respectively, as the Bulls beat second-place Sickles 35-62.

The boys race was restarted twice due to collisions at the first turn. The first involved a Sarasota Riverview runner and the second involved Venice's Ryan Kuhns and Neill Heim.

"The first one, somebody from Riverview fell, and the second one, one of my teammates, Neill Heim, fell," Kuhns said. "A runner from Bloomingdale cut me off, and I started stumbling. And in order to keep me from stumbling, Neill caught me, and that sent him to the ground."

The Sarasota Riverview girls outdistanced runner-up Bloomingdale 60-84 as Carling Cookerly placed second to Bloomingdale's Amber Littleton, who covered the 3-mile course in 18 minutes, 23 seconds. Gaither, led by Amanda Wells' third-place finish, took sixth to become the only other county school to qualify for the regional meet in Orlando.

Littleton and Cookerly are longtime friends, and this was the first time this season the Bloomingdale runner was able to defeat Cookerly. "I had never run this course before, but my coach and I went over it," Littleton said. "The sand was a little tough, and Carling's great. She sets the pace."
