TAMPA -- Lightning center Brad Richards is the NHL's rookie of the month for October.

Lightning center Brad Richards had 11 points in the month of October.
The 20-year-old from Montague, Prince Edward Island, led all rookies with 11 points (3 goals, 8 assists) in 10 games, and had a hand in 35 percent of the team's 32 goals.

"Most deserving," coach Steve Ludzik said. "He has great hands and great vision. He makes plays nobody else can."

Richards beat three goaltenders: San Jose's Evgeni Nabokov (5-1-1, 1.75 goals-against average, 938 save percentage), Ottawa's Jani Hurme (4-1-2, 2.38, .911) and St. Louis' Brent Johnson (4-0-0, 1.25, .943).

"The better thing would be to win right now," Richards said. "That's the main focus. That's why players don't think about these things. They just happen. That's why these things are just a bonus."

Richards is the third Lightning player to be named, joining Daymond Langkow (February 1997) and Vinny Lecavalier (February 1999).
