Bible-based diet makes followers say, 'Hallelujah!'
By LISA PEEPLES © St. Petersburg Times, published November 4, 2000 INVERNESS -- For many years, Susan Winter's husband, Gary, suffered joint pain and several illnesses. After taking a series of medications and visiting several physicians, he finally found relief from a non-medical resource -- the Bible, the couple say. Mrs. Winter attended a seminar given by Dr. George H. Malkmus, founder of the nationally used Hallelujah Diet. It was through this seminar that she was able to help direct her husband on the path to wellness, she said. "The crux of the diet is to stay off foods that are harmful to our bodies, such as the shelved and boxed processed foods, which are basically dead and the enzymes are gone. Instead, we need to eat live food that gives our bodies the right nutrients to help heal itself," she said. "I learned through the diet that if we stop putting the harmful things in our body . . . we are not going to have to treat the symptoms that we have because the symptoms will not be there." Susan Winter, 54, said that some of the foods that participants are encouraged to eat are fruits and vegetables, such as those found in the Garden of Eden. Recommendations on how to prepare and cook foods are found in the literature and book published on the Hallelujah Diet. She said the foundation for the diet is based on Genesis 1:29, which states, "And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for food." "Good things for us would be like carrot juice . . . raw fruits and vegetables, basically a vegetarian diet. Some of the things that we need to stay away from are salt, white flour, sugar, milk and meats," she said. "In Bible time, meats were 3 percent fat versus the 30 percent they contain today. Meats are fiberless and can take three to four days to exit the body. Then when we combine meat with sugar, the meat tends to ferment and give us bad breath, body odor and digestive problems," she said. She said that after following the Hallelujah Diet for a couple of weeks, she and her husband noticed a tremendous boost in energy and the eradication of joint pain and other ailments. "All my husband's joint pain is gone. He lost over 25 pounds, and he is not sick anymore. My energy level is tremendous compared to what it used to be. I can think more clearly, and no more sore throats," she said. After testing the diet and seeing its results, Winter decided she would take it one step further. She trained under Dr. Malkmus' Hallelujah Acres program and became a "Back to the Garden" minister, which enables her to offer local classes on the diet. She said Hallelujah Acres is based in Shelby, N.C. "This has made such a tremendous difference in our lives that I could not see us not sharing this with others. This is not something you do for money. This is a ministry to help other people like us," she said. "After my grandchildren, this is one of the biggest blessings that I have experienced in my life. We love this diet. It is extreme, but you get extremely good health from it. The longer you are on this diet, the better you feel and the easier it gets," she said. If you're interestedSusan Winter will have a booth with information on the Hallelujah Diet at the First Baptist Church of Floral City Health Fair, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today.
