CARROLLWOOD -- The Hindu Temple of Tampa plans to add an entrance tower to its sanctuary on Lynn Road. But before construction begins, the church needs a variance that would allow for the new tower to be built above county code.

The entrance tower, or Gopuram, would rise nearly 66 feet high, 16 feet above the county's height requirement. The tower has "religious and spiritual significance," says the petition, and its height is determined using traditional guidelines that have been followed for more than 3,000 years.

The request also indicates the tower would be equipped with a lightning arrester and an aircraft warning light.

A land use hearing officer is scheduled to hear the petition Dec. 21. (Petition 02-0086)

CARROLLWOOD: The county's real estate department is seeking approval for a rezoning of .60 acres at the northeast corner of Dale Mabry Highway and Linebaugh Avenue.

The county plans to use the land for a retention pond and parking spaces taken away from the Cypress Pointe Office Center by eminent domain action during the Linebaugh Avenue widening project, the petition says. If approved, the property would be transferred to the office complex.

A zoning hearing master is scheduled to hear the proposal Jan 14.
