Kyle and David Hartzog combined for a 1,339 pinfall and Kristofer and Jay McClendon rolled a 1,412, capturing titles in the Greater Pinellas YouthAdult Tournament's Bantam and Prep divisions, respectively.

The Hartzogs topped Jeremy and Michael White by three pins in the tourney that ended at Sunshine Bowl. The McClendons won by a pin over Joseph Fitzgerald and Tim Smith.

The winning duos shot their scores in the opening round three weekends ago, and the performances withstood final challengers.

Greg Ickes rolled a 279-730. His partner, Drew Beierlein, fired a 278-823 -- both clean scratch series -- for a 1,610 total to run away with the Junior Division championship. Travis Reichert and Brian Halstrom (1,471) were second. Randy Finigan and Joe Minark's 1,426 captured the Major Senior Division, and Edward Wolf and Ickes rolled a 1,245 to win the Special Division title.

The tournament drew 196 entries -- one of the best recent turnouts, said director Mary Laird.

REBELS HOLD FIRST: The Dixie Hollins boys topped the scratch standings as the Pinellas County High School League headed into Week 8 of a 13-week season.

The Rebels are 122-45, four points ahead of Largo. Clearwater is third.

The Rebels are led by Ryan Brembs (201 average), James Jacot, Clinton Perry, Fabio Lakilak and Ron Sullivan.

East Lake continued to head the girls scratch competition with only three players. Trailing were Northeast and Pinellas Park.

Courtney Yeakley (175 average) leads East Lake. Her teammates are Jillian Pavlak and Kaitlin Kashmanian.

Palm Harbor is in front of the new junior varsity handicap competition. Lakewood and Countryside are second and third, respectively.

CLASSIC OPENS: Nearly 190 teams are expected for the three-weekend run of the 48th annual St. Petersburg Women's Classic.

The tournament opened this past Saturday at Southland Lanes. The singles and doubles, which drew more than 800 entries, will be contested at Sunrise Lanes.

The tourney attracts some of Florida's top bowlers. Out-of-state players also compete, but the events of Sept. 11 have cut many travel plans.

Tournament director Marge Carver said entries are good considering the times.

"We've had as many as 400 teams in the past," Carver said, "but anything we get we are grateful for.'

MERSCH LEADS: Tampa's Jeffrey Mersch heads the B.C. Junior Gold boys competition in the Countryside Lanes youth leagues.

Mersch has won Loschetter and Youth Bowlers Tour events, and he just missed the final cut for the Junior Team USA earlier this year.

Mersch has a 45-4 league record. T. Reeves (40-9) is second, and defending champion Shawn Ryan (40-11) is third.

Palm Harbor's Kelly Fecke (40-9) is the girls leader. She's followed by Crystal Stutler and Jamie Potter.

Potter also tops the Club Elite scratch singles league with a 40-9 mark. Mike Marias (40-9) is the boys front-runner.

The Fireballs (35-14) lead the Junior Olympians league, bowlers 9-11. The team's players are John Jaufmann, Joshua Mathis, Kyle Kalapach and Bryan Havelin.

Bowlers are trying to qualify for the National Coca-Cola Tournament. The Bill Landen tourney is scheduled for Nov. 10-11 at Countryside.

BVL ON TAP: Collections for the Bowlers' Link to Veterans -- formerly the Bowlers' Victory Legion -- fund will be conducted by the Suncoast and Clearwater Women's associations Monday-Nov. 11. Association representatives will be touring local centers requesting donations. Proceeds will go to local veterans organizations.

The BVL was started during World War II by First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt to benefit veterans.

The St. Petersburg Women's Association started its two-week drive today. JOINT EVENT: The Suncoast and Sarasota-Manatee associations have joined to present a doubles tournament for mixed, men or women Nov. 17-18 at AMF Bradenton Lanes.

Entry forms are available at most local centers. Walk-in entries and re-entries are welcome.

AROUND THE LANES: Chris Holly fired a 300-703 at Dunedin Lanes. ... Mark Cihal shot his second 300 game (699) in a week at Tarpon Lanes. ... Phil Hallums nailed a 300-744 at Rainbow Lanes. ... Jimmy Cohoon, 86, rolled a 286-548 at Southland Lanes.
