MAN CONVICTED OF MANSLAUGHTER: A jury found Norman Byrum guilty of manslaughter for the August 1999 death of Arthur Schultz, a Hernando air conditioning repairman. Byrum, 46, had faced at least 20 years and up to life in prison on a charge of second-degree murder. But the jury opted for manslaughter, one of several lesser crimes the panel was allowed to consider.

PRO-LINE MULLS MOVE: The political wrangling between the County Commission and the Economic Development Council has turned Pro-Line Boats into a pawn of sorts, vice president Johnny Walker said. Now the boatmaker will decide whether it wants out of the game. Walker said he planned to meet with the company's board of directors soon to decide whether to move forward with plans to build a new factory in Holder or take his business out of Citrus County. The boatmaker's second thoughts came this week after its $250,000 grant application stalled short of a County Commission vote for the third time in as many months.

TEENS REMEMBER FALLEN FRIEND: A group of about 50 teenagers gathered under the clear twilight of Halloween evening to remember their friend, Allison Decatrel, 17, a Citrus High School student who was struck by a car while trick-or-treating with friends in the Highlands area. The friends gathered at the spot of the fatal accident at South Highlands Avenue and East Lynn Street to christen a memorial plaque in Decatrel's honor.

WOMAN ALMOST WINS PRIZE: Tawnya Peaster of Floral City was among nearly 60 contestants who competed in a Hand-A-Thon, the prize for which was a fully furnished double-wide Fleetwood Home or a cash settlement of $25,000. Participants had to remain standing with one hand against a shoulder-high board except during breaks. Peaster started Oct. 27 and lasted until early Nov. 1, just short of winning the prize.
