MARINE MAMMAL AND SEA TURTLE STRANDING: Jim Rice, senior member of the New England Aquarium's rescue and rehabilitation team, speaks at 7 p.m. in Dendy-McNair Auditorium of Eckerd College, 4200 54th Ave. S, St. Petersburg. He and his colleagues are responsible for rescuing animals, researching the causes of their stranding, caring for them at the scene of the stranding and in captivity and rehabilitating them for eventual return to the wild. ART OF THE SPIRIT -- UNDERSTANDING EACH OTHER THROUGH ART: Irwin Sharp Fish, a native American, discusses Lakota art forms and compares traditional art to contemporary pan-native American art form at 7 p.m. in the Museum of Fine Art. Free, reservations requested 896-2667.

WEDNESDAY

CANDLELIGHT VIGIL: The Alzheimer's Association holds a night of rememberance at 7 p.m. in the courtyard of The Pier, overlooking Tampa Bay, 800 Second Ave. NE, St. Petersburg. Family members of those affected by the disease are encouraged to bring a photo of their loved one for the Memory Wall, a collage of pictures dedicated at last year's vigil. Call 578-2558.

FESTA AMERICANA: The St. Petersburg Junior College Concert Chorus and Madrigalians present their first concert at the new music center at 7:30 p.m. on the St. Petersburg campus corner of 66th Street and Fifth Ave. N. "SUGAR': The St. Petersburg Little Theater, 4025 31st St. S, presents the Jule Styne-Bob Merrill musical comedy Sugar, set in Chicago in the 1920s. Joe and Jerry, two down and out musicians, witness a gang rub-out and to avoid becoming the next hits they disguise themselves as Joephine and Daphne and join an all-girls band. The production is based on the movie Some Like It Hot. Performance dates are 8 p.m. Nov. 9, 10, 11 and Nov. 16, 17, 18 with matinees at 2 p.m. Nov. 12 and Nov. 19. $16, $8 students with I.D. CONTEMPORARY JAZZ VIOLIN: Mark O'Connor, violinist, composer and fiddler heralded as one of America's most gifted contemporary musicians performs with guitarist Frank Vignola and bassist Jon Burr at 8 p.m. in the Bayfront Center's Mahaffey Theater, 400 First St. S, St. Petersburg. ST. PETERSBURG TIMES FESTIVAL OF READING: Eckerd College, 4200 54th Ave. S, St. Petersburg hosts this popular yearly event from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 11 and 12. Featured are well known authors and journalists, including some Pulitzer winners and Florida writers, speaking on their works. Three open air stages of entertainment, Storyland, an area designed just for kids with bookmaking, writing, puppeteers, storytelling and a free books tent and parades of children's book characters. The American Civil Liberties Union presents the Banned Book Marathon, Christie's does book appraisals and Venue Theatre presents Famous Dead Authors. Free. Call 892-2358.
