TAMPA -- A 28-year-old Tampa woman died early Sunday after a driver ran through a red light and struck the vehicle in which she was riding, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Cindy C. Scott, of 4534 W Knollwood St., was pronounced dead at St. Joseph's Hospital following the 12:55 a.m. crash at Hillsborough Avenue and Benjamin Road. Four other people suffered minor injuries, police said.

Officers said Vernis Lee Johnson, 20, of 3919 LaSalle St. was driving west on Hillsborough Avenue with two passengers in a 1998 Mitsubishi when he failed to stop for the signal. Jennifer Walters, heading eastbound in a 1995 Plymouth, was attempting a left turn onto Benjamin Road when Johnson crashed into her car.

Walters was treated at St. Joseph's Hospital and released. The investigation is continuing.
