Rays to make Boggs hitting coach

Former managers Hal McRae and Terry Collins also are expected to be named to the staff today.

AMELIA ISLAND -- The Devil Rays coaching staff is about to become very recognizable.

The team is expected to announce today the hiring of future Hall of Famer Wade Boggs as hitting coach and former major-league managers Hal McRae and Terry Collins as bench and bullpen coach, respectively.

The Rays also are expected to hire former Phillies star Darren Daulton as their major-league catching instructor.

Boggs returns to the field after spending the past year as a special assistant to general manager Chuck LaMar. The longtime Tampa resident retired from the Raysin 1999, the season he achieved his 3,000th hit.

McRae, who compiled a 286-277 record as the Royals manager from 1991-94, has been the Phillies' hitting coach the past four seasons. A Bradenton resident, McRae was one of the original candidates for the Rays managing job before Larry Rothschild was hired in 1997.

Collins guided the Astros and Angels to five consecutive second-place finishes before resigning in Anaheim in 1999. He has a 444-434 career record. Collins spent the past year as a Cubs advance scout.

Daulton was one of Philadelphia's most popular players for 14 seasons. Traded to Florida in 1997, he helped the Marlins win the World Series before retiring after 15 major-league seasons.

The Rays are expected to create a special position for Daulton because their coaching staff is full. He will work with catchers in spring training and before home games but will not be in uniform during games.

Returning to the staff are pitching coach Bill Fischer, first-base coach Jose Cardenal and third-base coach Billy Hatcher.

Hitting coach Leon Roberts, bullpen coach Orlando Gomez and bench coach Bill Russell were fired in October.
