Farmer nine shots back

FT. PIERCE -- Hernando freshman Fred Farmer finished the first day of the Class A state golf tournament Monday in an eight-way tie for 35th place with 75 at Fairwinds Golf Course.

Farmer, who played in a threesome with Saddlebrook's Philippe Freeman, was nine strokes off the pace set by co-leaders Tyler Leon (St. Stephens) and Martin Ureta (Saddlebrook).

Farmer qualified for the state tournament by shooting an even-par 72 in the Region 3 tournament Oct. 30 on the World Woods Rolling Oaks course. He and fellow freshman teammate Keegan Ledford qualified for regionals by shooting 77 and 82, respectively, at the District 5 meet at Scotland Yards on Oct. 24.

Both freshmen advanced although Hernando finished fifth as a team and did not advance to regionals.

Hernando coach Pete Lahey said he believes Farmer is the first freshman in Hernando history to advance to states as an individual.

Play concludes with another 18-hole round today.

Individual standings, after one day:

1. Tyler Leon, St. Stephens 66

1. Martin Ureta, Saddlebrook 66

Ram tough

The Gainesville Eastside team that upset Hernando's volleyball team in the first round of the regional playoffs made it all the way to the round of eight before losing to top-ranked Hudson in Saturday night's regional final.

Auburndale played host to the regional, but Eastside eliminated the host school in a regional semifinal, 15-5, 15-8.

Hernando is the highest-ranked team not in the state final four, which will have Hudson, No. 2 Clearwater, No. 3 Titusville Astronaut and No. 6 Jacksonville Bishop Kenny competing Thursday and Saturday at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex in Lake Buena Vista.

Coed action

The Brooksville Department of Recreation and Parks is forming a fall coeducational volleyball league, which will conduct games 6 to 9 p.m. on Thursdays at the Jerome Brown Community Center.
