SAN ANTONIO -- City commissioners have given their blessing to a proposed special ceremony to recognize residents killed in World War II and Vietnam, in honor of the 60th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor.

"What better time than now to recognize what veterans have been through?" said Eric Herrmann, who suggested the ceremony at Tuesday's City Commission meeting. "With the present situation going on, we should take time to recognize our veterans."

Herrmann said a volunteer has agreed to provide seven pine trees to be planted in honor of the seven San Antonio residents killed in World War II and Vietnam, and Herrmann said he would ask the Rattlesnake and Gopher Enthusiasts to donate a plaque for the display.

Commissioners agreed to work with Herrmann and will look into planting the trees and installing the plaque and perhaps a park bench in a lot across the street from the city square at the intersection of College Avenue and Park Street.

Herrmann said he is working with others to develop a memorial program for Dec. 9, the Sunday closest to the Dec. 7 anniversary of the Japanese attack that killed more than 2,300 Americans.

Herrmann said he is still working on his plans and invites others with military experience to get in touch with him to help develop an appropriate tribute. He is also looking for experienced bugle players to offer taps at the ceremony. Messages may be left for Herrmann at City Hall, (352) 588-2127.
