TAMPA -- With its crucial Sunshine State Conference loss to Barry in Miami last Saturday, the University of Tampa volleyball squad fell into a tie atop the conference standings with the Bucs with a week left in the regular season. UT fell in a 30-23, 29-31, 30-17, 21-30, 8-15 thriller to see its 14-match win streak and 36-match SSC win streak end.
Hitters Tiffany Boatwright and Ania Ruiz enjoyed a solid week despite the Barry loss.
Boatwright had 15 kills against North Florida and 19 kills and six blocks against Barry. Ruiz had 23 kills against North Florida en route to being named SSC Player of the Month for October.
The Spartans end the regular season Saturday at home against Florida Southern. The South Region tournament begins Nov. 15 with UT and Barry are in position to host and claim the top seed. Sites and seedings will be determined after the regular season concludes Saturday.
CROSS COUNTRY: Tracy Buxton and Dee Dee Haefling qualified for the NCAA meets, marking the first time since 1989 the Spartans advanced runners.
Buxton, a senior, ran a time of 22 minutes, 4 seconds to place fourth at the NCAA South Region meet Saturday in Atlanta. Haefling, a freshman, was fifth in 22:12, and Liz Bragg and Erin Wilson placed 15th and 19th, respectively. Haefling's performance earned her Sunshine State Conference Female Runner of the Week honors. The NCAA Division II meet will be Nov. 17 at Slippery Rock in University, Pa.
WOMEN'S SOCCER: The Spartans put three players on the All-Sunshine State Conference women's team and coach Jay Entlich has been named SSC Coach of the Year.
Defenders Emma Carlson and Ginger Lynn were named to the first team and midfielder Stacy Estes was named to the second team.
MEN'S SOCCER: UT coach Keith Fulk was named SSC Men's Coach of the Year and forward Roy Fink was named first-team SSC and Robbie Folbrycht was named Co-Freshman of the Year along with Saint Leo's Anthony Rosso. Spartan midfielder Ingo Fochler, defender Marlon Rojas and goalkeeper Roy Swarts were also named to the second team.
