EVENTS: The University of Tampa's peace volunteer center will hold its inaugural Oxfam Hunger Banquet today from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Fletcher Lounge, Plant Hall. The purpose of the banquet is to help raise awareness of the disparity of food and resources in portions of the United States and the world. Dinner is free. Reservations are required. Call (813) 253-6233, ext. 3695. UT will hold an admissions open house from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday in the lobby of Plant Hall. Faculty members representing the university will be on hand to discuss their respective disciplines with high school seniors and transfer students. Members of UT's financial aid staff will conduct a session on financial aid and how to apply for academic and need-based scholarships. Campus tours are available. Call (813) 253-6211. UT hosts a poetry reading by poet Robert Dana at 8 p.m. Thursday in the trustees' conference room at UT. Dana is a winner of the 1994 Carl Sandburg Medal for Poetry and numerous other awards and fellowships. He is a graduate of Drake University and the University of Iowa's Writers' Workshop, where he studied with Robert Lowell and John Berryman. Admission is free. Call (813) 253-6232.

SEMINAR: UT features three expert speakers at its annual yearend financial forum at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Plant Hall Grand Salon, and Wednesday and Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in the Sword and Shield Room of the Bob Martinez Sports Center. The guest speakers Kevin Cameron, CPA, MBA; Steven P. Riley, estate attorney; and Michael J. Turrisi, CFP, will examine issues of proposed tax reform, reducing income taxes, wills and trusts. MUSIC: USF's Opera Theatre presents Henry Purcell's baroque masterpiece Dido and Aeneas at 8 p.m. Wednesday, at 8 p.m. Nov. 17 and at 4 p.m. Nov. 19 in the University Theatre 2. Acknowledged to be one of London's most distinguished composers even in his own era, Purcell agreed to debut his new opera at a ladies' boarding school around 1680. The work encompasses a broad range of expressive music, from a high-spirited sailors' dance to one of the most touching of all operatic arias, Dido's Lament, When I am laid in earth. This opera remains the oldest English opera still regularly performed. Cost is $6 general admission, $4 students and seniors. Call (813) 974-2323.

LECTURE: HCC's Brandon Campus Library will host a lecture for author Cantor Hauben at noon Thursday. Hauben will share selected portions of his forthcoming book: From the Flames: Miracles and Wonders of Survival and will exhibit a portion of his collection of Holocaust related artifacts. This will include books, coins, metals and photographs. The collection will remain on display for the day of presentation only. Call (813) 253-7812.
