Hobelmann attracts area's best bowlersBy PHIL GULICK © St. Petersburg Times, published November 10, 2000 St. Petersburg's Steve Hobelmann gets things done. As a member of the senior set, one of his pet projects was establishing a high-scoring singlesdoubles tournament for bowlers 50-and-over, but he included younger players, too. The West Coast Senior Tournament attracts some of the top bowlers in the Tampa Bay area, and Hobelmann schedules an event nearly every month. There will be some action at Sunshine Bowl in Pinellas Park on Nov. 19. The entry fee is $90 for each division: 50-and-over, 49-and-below. The format is eight qualifying games scratch, two match-play games, then 10 games of total pins. The cut is to the top five qualifiers for the stepladder finals. The payoff, based on 40 entries, is $600 to the winner, $400 for second, $300 for third and cash to 10th place. Touring players are excluded. The duo of Roy Ryan and Tim Davis captured the doubles title at Oakfield Lanes last month. Davis fired a 300 game, and Ryan contributed a 256 toward the victory, which netted them $1,100. Jason Mahr rolled a pair of 300 games to win the 49-under singles title and $300. Ron Woods captured the 50-up title and $325. For more information, contact Hobelmann, (727) 319-9625. PATS, GLADIATORS LEAD: The Pinellas Park No. 2 girls team and the Gibbs No. 1 boys squad grabbed leads in their respective divisions of the Pinellas County High School League last week. The Patriots, with only Nicole Bolze and Alyssa Henson on the team, bounced Largo into third and took the lead over Seminole in the girls' handicap competition. Palm Harbor University High broke a tie and moved into the scratch division lead over Northeast No. 1 by winning 20 points from Pinellas Park No. 2. Defending state Open Division champion Gibbs, led by Matt Mayhugh and Nick Bongiorno, took all 21 points from Pinellas Park No. 2 and skipped past defending league champion Dixie Hollins for the lead. East Lake No. 1 -- sparked by Greg Kashmanian, Ryan Price and Drew Anusbigian -- held on to second. Northeast's Justin Veitch rolled a 300-759. The league will be at Sunshine and Ten Pin lanes Thursday. The action starts at 3:30 p.m. The league banquet has been scheduled for Dec. 12 at 6 p. m. at Banquet Masters in Seminole. Tickets go on sale Nov. 21. They are $15 for dining guests, $2 for non-dining and $5 per student, refunded at the banquet. Walk-ins are not accepted. NABI WINNERS: Clearwater's Ernie Pietroburgo, Pinellas Park's Bill Heym and Palm Harbor's Pat Scanlon won titles in October. Scanlon topped Largo's Rick Laufer 254-196 at Liberty Lanes for his 10th championship and $225. St. Petersburg's Vince Davis defeated his wife, Marketta, 215-131 at Sunshine Lanes last weekend to win his 11th title and $220. The NABI crew is at AMF Kenneth City Lanes this weekend.
