PORT RICHEY -- A 33-year-old Spring Hill man was charged with driving while intoxicated and causing serious bodily injury after troopers said he crashed his car Thursday, seriously injured his passenger, then fled on foot.

The crash happened at 8:12 p.m. on Regency Park Boulevard. Witnesses told Florida Highway Patrol troopers that the driver of a white Buick struck several mailboxes and a light pole.

The driver, Jack Babcock of 14807 Little Ranch Road, Spring Hill, fled from the crash.

His passenger, whose name was not released, had multiple injuries including a possible broken neck, a broken leg and a skull fracture, the FHP said. She was flown to Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg.

Pasco County sheriff's deputies found Babcock shortly after the crash. According to a trooper, Babcock's blood alcohol content was .235, nearly three times the legal limit.

Babcock was charged with DUI, DUI with serious bodily injury, three counts of DUI with property damage, leaving the scene of an accident with injury, and two counts of property damage.

Troopers also discovered that Babcock had no valid driver's license and charged him for that offense, as well.

Babcock was arrested and held at the county jail in Land O'Lakes on $28,000 bail.
