Sunrise tries to recover from fireBy PHIL GULICK
© St. Petersburg Times, The phone rang late one night last month at Rusty Genevie's residence. "Rusty, your pro shop's on fire!" shouted a friend. Genevie arrived at Sunrise Lanes shortly after the firefighters to discover that $17,000 in inventory had gone up in smoke, part of the concourse facia was scorched and numerous electrical wires were charred. "They (firefighters) think it got started in the ball spinner," Genevie recalled, "but I'm not sure about that. It was an electrical fire." The shop's interior and part of the adjacent pet store were damaged. "The firefighters were here in less than five minutes, and if they'd been five minutes later, the whole center would have gone up," said Jerry Krauss, owner of Sunrise Lanes. Desk person John Frisco broke his left hand trying to force open the pro shop door. Bowlers can smell the smoke despite floor fans that ran continuously for weeks. "I didn't have insurance," Genevie said. "My partner let it lapse without telling me. I definitely will take a beating on this, but we plan to be reopened in a month or so." Fire is a liability hanging over every center, but it hasn't posed the danger it did in the past. During the days of lacquered lanes, fires were a common occurrence because of its flammability. "We were lucky, but it'll take thousands (of dollars) to repair," Krauss said. PATRIOTS MOVE UP: The Pinellas Park boys team moved into third place in the scratch competition of the Pinellas County High School League, dropping Clearwater to sixth.
