Guide to the Kennedy exhibit

At the entrance to the exhibit, a model of John F. Kennedy’s childhood home in Brookline, Mass., invites you to step back in time to learn about the public and private life of the 35th president of the United States.

The 20 galleries span Kennedy’s experiences in World War II, his marriage to Jacqueline Bouvier, his years in politics, his family life, his visit to Tampa four days before his death in Dallas, the somber journey to Arlington Cemetery and, finally, the legacy of the president who spent only 1,000 days in office.

WHAT: John F. Kennedy: The Exhibition

WHEN: Opens Friday, Nov. 12, and continues through May 29, 2000. Open seven days a week, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's. Reduced hours on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve (closes at 5 p.m.).

WHERE: Florida International Museum, 100 Second St. N, St. Petersburg.

TICKETS: $13.95, adults; $12.95, seniors (65 and older) and military (with valid I.D.); $7.95, students (with valid I.D.); $5.95, children (ages 6-18). Children 5 and younger get in free. Season passes for Florida residents: $27 per person. (Passes not valid Dec. 24 to Jan. 2). Note: Allow about two hours to view the exhibition at a leisurely pace.

PARKING: On the street in two-hour parking places or in the museum's garage.

SERVICES: The museum is wheelchair accessible. Men's and women's restrooms have changing stations. The movie shown at the start of the tour will be closed-captioned for the hearing impaired. Ticket price includes an audio guide, which also will be available in large print English, Spanish, German, French and Portuguese. The museum store will have catalogs with color photographs of objects in the exhibition.

How to get there

• FROM THE NORTH:
  Take I-275 south to I-375 (left exit) into downtown St. Petersburg, which merges into Fourth Avenue N. Continue on Fourth Avenue N to Fourth Street and turn right. Follow Fourth Street south for two blocks to Second Avenue N and turn left. Turn right on Second Street.
• FROM THE SOUTH
  Take I-275 north to I-175 (right exit) into downtown St. Petersburg, which merges into Fifth Avenue S. Continue on Fifth Avenue S to Third Street and turn left. Follow Third Street north to Second Avenue N and turn right. Turn right again onto Second Street.
• TRAFFIC NOTE: Central Avenue is downtown's north-south dividing line. Fourth Street is the main road through downtown. The area around the museum is crisscrossed with one-way streets. Also, avenues run east-west. Streets run north-south.
