Home Depot coming, Walgreens still on hold
By JANE BOKUN © St. Petersburg Times, published November 12, 2000 TOWN 'N COUNTRY -- Area shoppers will soon have a nearby place to buy home improvement tools, but a new Walgreens may be put on hold. A troubled strip mall at the corner of Hillsborough Avenue and Memorial Highway, which at one time housed Kmart and Kash n' Karry, was torn down over the summer to make way for new businesses. Home Depot, Baskin Robbins and Dunkin' Donuts are all slated to move in, but a large sign touting a Walgreens drugstore may be a little bit premature. "We have no signed lease or purchasing agreement for that property," said Michael Polzin, a Walgreen spokesperson. "We're working on the deal." If it goes through, he said, Walgreen would build a new, free-standing, 15,000-square-foot store. It would be open 24 hours with a drive-through window for prescription drugs. The Walgreens across the street in Ross Plaza would close. "The new structure also will have more convenience foods and wider aisles," Polzin said. He said there is no word on when a lease will be signed. Joe Moreda, a Hillsborough County planner, said a gas station and possibly a fast food restaurant are also planned for the strip center. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • St. Petersburg Times
