CLEARWATER -- Jesuit and Academy of the Holy Names won the Class 2A, Region 3 meets by large margins Saturday at Clearwater Central Catholic.

Paced by Colin Strickland (fourth, 16 minutes, 29 seconds), John Astrab (eighth, 16:43) and Sebring Sierra (11th, 16:51), Jesuit defeated St. Petersburg Catholic 57-84. Jesuit, also the district champion, qualified for the state meet for the second consecutive season.

"We've been training so we would peak around this time," Jesuit coach Mike Boza said. "Last year, we peaked at the regionals and didn't do well at states. So now we wanted to run well, and then we'll train in earnest for states."

The Tigers will be joined at the state tournament by the Barons, Bradenton Lakewood Ranch, Englewood Lemon Bay, Sarasota Cardinal Mooney and Lakewood, which edged Frostproof by one point.

AHN defeated second-place Lakewood Ranch 53-106. Rachel Gillman was third (19:41), Sara Petrick was fourth (19:53) and Danielle Darby was fifth (20:01) to lead AHN.

"We figured CCC and Lakewood Ranch would be our biggest competition," AHN coach Frank Buono said. "I thought if we could race to our potential, we'd have a good chance. Now if we can do that next week, we'll also have a good chance."

CCC, with help from Apryl Wall's first-place finish, finished third. Bradenton Southeast was fourth, Frostproof fifth and LaBelle sixth. St. Petersburg Catholic finished seventh by three points. Tampa Catholic's Glenna Dickman finished second in 19:39 and also will run at state.
