Football and politics

If you're from Florida, there is no getting away from the shadow of the presidential election drama. As South Florida was leaving the field after Saturday's loss to Middle Tennessee State, Blue Raiders band members chanted, "Recount, recount, recount."

Okay, that's impressive

There's no time like the pregame warmups to intimate an opponent. About an hour before the game, kicker Bill Gramatica was standing at midfield booming 52- and 57-yard field goals, while just missing 62-yarders. Quipped one Tennessee sports writer: "That guy will be kicking on Sundays. Meanwhile, there's our guy (freshman Brian Kelly) practicing from the 31." Ironically, Gramatica missed his first field-goal attempt from 46 yards, and Kelly nailed his only attempt.

This side is ours

Middle Tennessee State makes sure opponents have no chance to mistake the visitor's tunnel for the home team's. The Blue Raiders have a giant, inflatable tunnel set up on their side. And to top it off, there is a giant gray horse (the team's mascot) sitting atop the tunnel. The only negative is the Coca-Cola label that's bigger than the words Middle Tennessee.

Meet an ex-Gator

MTS offensive line coach Joe Wickline is a 1983 graduate of Florida and played on the Gators team 1977-80, including UF's last winless team (0-10-1) in 1979.

Quotable

"Overall as a team, we came out flat and we just didn't get it done. We just didn't execute." -- senior RB Rafael Williams
