UF soccer gets another SEC crown

BATON ROUGE, La. -- Andi Sellers scored and Auburn had an own goal as the Florida women's soccer team won its sixth consecutive Southeastern Conference tournament title, 2-1 over the Tigers on Sunday afternoon at the LSU Soccer Complex.

The Gators received the SEC's automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament field, which will be announced today. This will be Florida's sixth straight tournament appearance.

Sellers scored at the 34:15 mark, hitting the upper left slot of the goal from 35 yards over the fingertips of Auburn goalkeeper Megan Rivera.

Auburn had an opportunity to tie the score in the first half when UF goalkeeper Jordan Kellgren couldn't quite gather in the ball off a free kick. Auburn's Sandra Carnes took the shot on the loose ball in the box, but the ball banged off the crossbar and the defense cleared.

The Gators went up 2-0 early in the second half. Casey Hamel fed Crystal Frimpong, who was streaking down the right side of the box. Frimpong tried to cross to Sellers, but the ball deflected off the foot of Auburn's Megan Stam and rolled into the goal at the left post at 47:27.

UNC 4, FSU 0: Anne Remy had a goal and three assists for the host Tar Heels in the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament championship game.

Alyssa Ramsey added a goal and two assists as North Carolina earned an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.

Ramsey also had two goals in a semifinal against Wake Forest on Friday night and was named tournament MVP.

Florida State was outshot 17-3 but still is assured of an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament.

Men's soccer

CHARLOTTE 1, USF 0: Juan Munoz-Airey scored his seventh goal of the season as the visiting 49ers dropped the Bulls into the No. 3 seed for the Conference USA tournament that begins Thursday.

USF, which fell to 9-1 in games decided by one goal, faces Marquette or Cincinnati in the tournament opener.

"It was a great college game; both teams had their chances," Bulls coach John Hackworth said. "It is why we play these games. We just came up short due to some great saves by their keeper."

At the 77:21 mark, Munoz-Airey fired the ball to the upper right corner of the goal. The ball deflected off the hands of USF keeper Troy Perkins and into the upper corner.

The Bulls took several shots and corner kicks in the final minutes but couldn't convert. USF took 18 shots overall as keeper Lucas Mackanos made 10 saves for the 49ers.

Volleyball

USF 3, TULANE 0: The host Bulls swept their ninth straight opponent, 30-24, 30-24, 30-17 over the Green Wave, to clinch the No. 3 seed in the C-USA tournament. USF, which has won all 21 matches with Tulane, opens the tournament in Houston on Friday against Marquette, Louisville or DePaul. Kelly Mathiasmeier, the team's lone senior, received a framed jersey before the match.

UF 3, KENTUCKY 0: The SEC champion Gators closed out their regular season with a 30-20, 30-15, 30-19 win over the host Wildcats, capping Florida's seventh straight undefeated SEC season and ninth overall for coach Mary Wise. The Gators enter the SEC tournament as the top seed and plays Georgia in the first round Friday.

FSU 3, N.C. STATE 0: The host Seminoles closed the regular season with a 30-16, 30-15, 30-25 win over the Wolfpack on Senior Day. FSU clinched a tie for fourth in the ACC and will learn its seed for the ACC tournament Tuesday.
