Xpress, the Coolest Section of the St. Petersburg Times, is the home for features, news and views of interest to young readers. Most of the work in Xpress, which appears on Mondays in Floridian, is produced by the Times' X-Team. The team of journalists ages 9-17 from around the Tampa Bay area is selected every year at the end of the school year to serve during the following school term. The current team of 12 was chosen out of 150 applicants. Watch for X-Team application forms in Xpress during the month of May.

'Harry' toys get here first

The movie isn't out yet (just four more days!) but the toys based on Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone are on store shelves now. Check out Harry's Levitating Challenge (Mattel, $34.99). The object of the game is to guide a floating ball (held up by air) through obstacles on a maze. Other Potter toys include action figures, Lego sets, an interactive Roarin' Snorin' Norbert and a 3-D board game.

A pledge for the radio

The Magic Morning Show With Chadd & Kristi on radio station WWRM-FM 94.9 (Magic) is inviting elementary and middle school classrooms to recite the Pledge of Allegiance for broadcast. If your school can't provide a recording, the station will send a producer to your class. Have your teacher call WWRM at 727-576-1073 to participate.

'Nicktoons' CD hits stores

The Newest Nicktoons, a 52-track compilation of songs from Nickelodeon's most popular TV shows -- SpongeBob SquarePants, Rugrats, Rocket Power, Hey Arnold!, CatDog and Angry Beavers and others -- is available in stores for $13.98 ($9.98 on cassette).

Olive Garden seeks essays

The Olive Garden restaurant is seeking students to enter its sixth annual Pasta Tales essay contest. In 250 words or less, kids ages 7 to 16 are asked to answer "If you could trade places with anyone for a day, who would it be and why?" The grand prize winner gets a trip to New York and a $1,000 U.S. Savings Bond. Entry forms are available at Olive Garden restaurants or online at www.olivegarden.com. Entries must be postmarked by Dec. 3.

Plenty of heroes on Cartoon Network

Sometimes a situation is too big for a single hero. That's when you need them all. The Justice League, premiering on the Cartoon Network at 7 p.m. Saturday, puts all your superhero favorites in one show. The half-hour animated series follows the premise and story line of the comic books.
