Miami still is No. 1 in the AP media poll, but it's a shaky No. 1.

Miami still is No. 1 in the AP media poll, but it's a shaky No. 1.

The Hurricanes held off Boston College 18-7 Saturday, then held off No. 2 Nebraska in Sunday's balloting by the 72 sportswriters and broadcasters on the Associated Press panel.

Miami wasn't as lucky in the ESPN/USA Today coaches poll, where Nebraska took over the No. 1 spot with the Hurricanes second.

In the AP Top 25, Miami received 44 first-place votes and 1,768 points, with Nebraska collecting the other 28 first-place votes and 1,756 points.

Last week, Miami led Nebraska by 36 points. The Huskers beat Kansas State 31-21 Saturday after trailing by a point at halftime.

The top seven teams remained the same as last week. BYU moved up one spot to No. 8, Washington State two to No. 9 and Maryland three to No. 10.

Florida State tumbled 11 places to No. 21 after a 34-28 loss to unranked North Carolina State. FSU is in danger of dropping out of the AP poll for the first time since Sept. 17, 1989, a streak of 210 polls.

Syracuse, which visits Miami on Saturday with the Big East title on the line, moved up four places to No. 14 with their eighth win in a row, 24-13 over West Virginia.

Colorado jumped six spots to No. 15 after beating Iowa State 40-27. The Buffaloes host the Cornhuskers on Nov. 23 for the Big 12 North title.

Marshall and Ohio State are the new Top 25 teams this week, with Georgia Tech and Michigan State dropping out.

NORTHWESTERN: School career rushing leader Damien Anderson won't play again for the Wildcats, opting to have surgery on his dislocated left shoulder. Anderson wants to have the operation as soon as possible so he can take part in the NFL combine workouts in February, he told the Chicago Sun-Times.

Late Saturday

STANFORD 51, ARIZONA 37: Having to play without quarterback Randy Fasani again and missing sidelined defensive mainstays such as safety Simba Hodari and end Austin Lee only made the Cardinal hungry.

Chris Lewis passed for three first-half touchdowns and Tank Williams figured in two fumble returns for scores as Stanford rebounded from a tough loss to Washington.

The Wildcats made it close by scoring three touchdowns within 5:16 of the fourth quarter, but Cardinal coach Tyrone Willingham fixed that by inserting the first-stringers who came out after taking a 51-16 lead.

"We have quite a few guys out of our lineup and they are impact players," Willingham said. "When it went deeper, it stressed us a little bit, but the guys stepped up."

BOISE ST. 28, HAWAII 21: Brock Forsey and David Mikell each scored two touchdowns for the visiting Broncos, keeping them alive for a bowl berth.

Boise State is one-half game behind Western Athletic Conference leader Louisiana Tech. Hawaii saw its five-game winning streak and bowl hopes end.
