Police reportsBy Times staff writer © St. Petersburg Times, published November 13, 2000 Man jailed after workers say he stole steakHUDSON -- A 43-year-old Hudson man was arrested Saturday on a theft charge after he went into a Winn-Dixie, stuffed a steak down the front of his pants, paid for a four-pack of toilet paper and walked out, Pasco County sheriff's deputies said. Steven Hauk, 43, 9602 Ball Court, went into the grocery store at 8:50 p.m. Saturday. Managers at the Winn-Dixie, 14134 U.S. 19, saw Hauk put the steak in his pants, a report said. They watched as Hauk paid for the toilet paper and left. In the parking lot, they confronted Hauk, and asked him to come back inside. Hauk complied, but managers said he tried running out by pushing them, and they pushed back, the report said. Hauk fell to the ground and hit his head. Hauk told deputies "when he realized he did not have enough money for both, he decided to steal the steak," the report said. Deputies took Hauk to a hospital to be medically cleared to go to jail. Doctors discovered a cut to his scalp that needed four staples and a hairline fracture on his left wrist. Deputies took Hauk to the Land O'Lakes jail because he had no photo identification on him at the time of his arrest. He remained in jail Sunday evening on $500 bail. Jose Manuel Martinez, 19, 37203 Patchoosa Ave., was arrested by deputies after he led them on a brief car chase to an apartment complex. Deputies said that at a minute before midnight Saturday, Martinez and three cousins went to a home in the 15000 block of Pinellas Avenue, forced their way in and beat Ponciano Nava with a wooden club. Deputies said the three cousins fled, and Martinez got in his car. A deputy called to the home saw Martinez drive off and gave chase to 15119 Davis Loop. There, the deputy ordered Martinez, at gunpoint, to lie down. Martinez walked into a crowd of people outside the apartment and only later came out of the crowd under a deputy's order, a report said. Martinez was charged with residential burglary with battery, felony fleeing to elude, resisting arrest without violence and knowingly driving on a suspended license.
