About this sectionBy LARRY LIEBERT © St. Petersburg Times, published November 13, 2000 Every month or two, some computer company, chipmaker or investment analyst predicts a real slowdown in personal computer sales. Maybe, they fret, everyone who can be talked into buying a computer already has one. Perhaps, but there always seem to be newbies of all ages -- like my Dad, who finally decided a few months back to spring for a snazzy laptop. (Now, I'm planning to spend my December vacation teaching him how to get the darn thing to work.) For those of you who are almost ready to spring for your first computer or to abandon your sluggish old one for a new model, Tech Times offers this second annual edition of our Computer Buyer's Guide. We hope it will arm you with the information you need for your holiday computer shopping. You'll find everything from recommendations on what to expect in each price range to a glossary of computer jargon. The guide again was created by the team that produces Tech Times each Monday: personal technology editor Dave Gussow, copy and design editor (and Mac user) William Lampkin and regular contributors John Torro and Jules Allen. And again, we thank the editors of PC World magazine for permission to reprint their best buy recommendations, which are based on extensive testing, as well as for contributions from their staff experts to some of the stories. Let us know what you think about this special report. Phone us at (727) 893-8160 or send an e-mail to techtimes@sptimes.com. Our regular Business Times section will return next Monday, with the weekly Tech Times tucked inside. © 2006 • All Rights Reserved • Tampa Bay Times
