Apple's Macintosh computers share several common features, including:

  • Built-in 10/100Base-T Ethernet port.
  • Support for AirPort wireless networking.
  • 56K V.90 internal modem.
  • Two USB ports, except one on iBook.
  • Two FireWire (IEEE 1394) ports, except one on iBook and none on the basic iMac.
  • Mac OS 9 operating system.

Bundled software includes: iMovie 2, AppleWorks, Microsoft Internet Explorer and Outlook Express, Netscape Communicator, FAXstf and Palm Desktop Software.

It's a work of engineering and aesthetic art, but Apple's G4 Cube suffers from lack of expandability and high cost.

Here are the various Mac models and features available. Machines may be custom-built -- additional RAM, larger hard disk, etc. -- when ordered from Apple.

iMac/iMac DV/iMac DV+/iMac DV Special Edition

  • Prices: $799 to $1,499.

Standard features include: 350-, 400-, 450- or 500MHz PowerPC G3; 512K L2 cache; 64MB or 128MB RAM (expandable to 1 gigabyte); built-in 15-inch CRT display; VGA output port (DV models); ATI Rage 128 Pro graphics card with 8MB RAM; 7GB, 10GB, 20GB or 30GB hard disk; CD-ROM or DVD-ROM; stereo audio input/output minijacks; two stereo headphone minijacks on front; built-in microphone; pair of built-in speakers.

Colors: indigo, ruby, sage, graphite and snow.

iBook/iBook Special Edition

  • Prices: $1,499 and $1,799

Standard features include: 366- or 466MHz PowerPC G3 with 256K L2 cache; 64MB RAM (expandable to 320MB); 12.1-inch TFT active matrix display; 8MB video RAM; ATI RAGE Mobility 128 video controller; 10GB hard disk; CD-ROM or DVD-ROM; composite video output port (for presentations); stereo audio output minijack; built-in mono speaker.

Colors: indigo, graphite and key lime.

G4 Cube

  • Prices: $1,799 and up.

Standard features include: 450- or 500MHz PowerPC G4; 1MB L2 cache; 64MB, 128MB or 256MB RAM (expandable to 1.5 gigabytes); ATI RAGE 128 Pro graphics card with 16MB video RAM or ATI Radeon graphics card with 32MB; 20GB, 30GB or 40GB hard disk; DVD-ROM; two Harman Kardon speakers.

Power Mac G4

  • Prices: $1,599 and up.

Standard features include: 400-, dual 450- or dual 500MHz PowerPC G4 with 1MB L2 cache; 64MB, 128MB or 256MB RAM (expandable to 1.5GB); ATI RAGE 128 Pro graphics card with 16MB video RAM or ATI Radeon graphics card with 32MB; 20GB, 30GB or 40GB hard disk; DVD-ROM or DVD-RAM; three PCI slots; stereo audio input/output minijacks; built-in speaker.

PowerBook G3

  • Prices: $2,499 and up.

Standard features include: 400- or 500MHz PowerPC G3 with 1MB backside L2 cache; 64MB or 128MB RAM (expandable to 512MB); 14.1-inch TFT active matrix display; 8MB video RAM; ATI RAGE Mobility 128 video controller; 10GB, 20GB or 30GB hard disk; DVD-ROM; 24-bit VGA video output port; S-video output port; two built-in speakers; internal microphone; stereo audio input/output jacks; hot-swappable expansion bay; PC Card and CardBus slot; infrared (irDA) port; Kensington cable lock slot; keyboard lock.
